Firstborn
(1984)
Reviewed by Erin Gilmer
Rating: 7.5 Beans

efore Corey Haim was breaking hearts and breaking outta re-hab, he played the baby brother in the suburban drug-epic, "First Born". Terri Garr struggles to raise a family in the wake of her husbands re-marriage and her sons' coming of age. What does she do? She starts dating "bad boy" Sam (played by Peter Weller). Her oldest (Jake)can see right through Sam's facade. Suddenly we discover that Sam is a (gasp!) drug dealer and so is (gasp!)Terri Garr. Sam is diabolical, though. He wins the boys over (temporarily)with (Dude!) dirt bikes. Terri becomes a self-absorbed coke head and Jake becomes this brooding, drinking, dirt-bike riding, bad-ass. Corey Haim is mis-cast as the school bully (what is he beating up? Two year olds?). In the end, the boys win out and Terri throws Sam out on his coke-loving keister. This is a cheesey drama for the whole, disfunctional family.
