h My God!! A Van Damme movie that doesn't completely suck! What is the world coming to when you can't even count on "The Muscles from Brussels" for a horrible movie. Maybe he got a new manager or something. Well anyway, back to the point. First off, I would like to make it clear that this by no means is a good movie, but it is one of Van Damme's best. Which puts it on par with Jackie Chan's worst ("First Strike" if anyone cares). So go see a Chan movie, it's better. But, if you have to see Van Damme in action, this is your best bet yet.
The movie's plot is there, a little weak and, as in the case with most fighting movies, just gets in the way. Here is all you need to know: Big tournament of all the best fighters in the world. That is all. There are some lame little sub-plots here and there, just ignore them and watch the action. And that is where this movie delivers.
Fighting, fighting, fighting! There are alot of great fighters in this movie, and they end up being more entertaining that Van Damme (like that's all that difficult). There are huge guys, little guys, burly guys, quick guys, and they make the movie.
The camera work is good. Editing and dubbing is fine. Good lighting and sets make for good atmosphere in the movie. I have a more descriptive vocabulary than this but it isn't need right now. The film is solid in these aspects, but not wonderful.
Finally, don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater of Van Damme. I have watched almost all of his movies (except "Double Team", just because of Rodman) and they are good for a laugh. This one and "Bloodsport" are his two best ever. And, strangly enough, they are very similar in plot. But this is action, and plot is meaningless, so I'll let that slide. Side note: I could never hate anyone that uses a pick up line like "I can crush a walnut with my butt".
Bottom Line: Solid action/fighting movie. Rent it with people of your own sex if you're straight, opposite sex if you're gay, then sit back and laugh. It also helps to throw things at the TV. Enjoy.
