SubUrbia
(1997)
Reviewed by Chris Bjuland
Rating: 4.5 Beans

ubUrbia is a, how did they say it, "unflinching look at life amidst the tract homes and strip malls of young America, revealing a world that's at once all-too-familiar, yet as unique as the individualswho loiter within." Uh, huh. Right. Bullshit. It's a stupid movie that tries to be a comedy and a drama and fails at both. It's another gen-x movie about latchkey kids who are left to fend for themselves because their parents are non-existent and all the authority figures in their miserable little lives are evil. God forbid that people take responsiblity for their own lives. While the cast of actors were amusing, they fail to make us give a care if any of them lived or died. All I could think about was finding the power button on the VCR to make them all shut up. I like Parker Posey, she's a great actress (check out "Party Girl" and "The House of Yes"), but it this movie she's mainly eye candy. Giovanni Ribisi was great in the "X-Files", and if anyone had to stand out in "SubUrbiA", it would be him.

I tried to find more understanding at the "official" website (www.suburbia-movie.com/), but all I found were links that don't work and false praise to bands that suck. Am I missing the point here? Hell, no! This movie sucks. End of story.
