Under Siege
(1992)
Reviewed by Russell Lutz
Rating: 7 Beans

t's not that I'm mad that this film was a complete rip off of "Die Hard". I love rip offs of "Die Hard".

It's not that I'm incapable of liking a Steven Segal film. In fact, I quite enjoyed the shlocky but entertaining sequel, "Under Siege 2: Dark Territory". But this thing? Forget about it!

Action films in general require a certain suspension of disbelief, but this one requires me to believe that a commando team could be snuck onto a navy ship with enough equipment and firepower to take it over. (Why the crack terrorist squad even opened the freezer to let Segal out is merely among the first in a series of annoyances. I guess the answer is, "Cause there wouldn't be a movie if they didn't.") It requires me to believe that Segal's Ryback, demoted for insubordination, can, with the help of a rag-tag collection of loveable misfits, repel these invaders.

And let's not forget the totally pointless inclusion of Erika Eleniak as a stripper with a heart of gold. Or maybe silver, at least.

Top it off with a bad guy who refuses to shoot the good guy, a last minute bomb-defusing, and a happy-happy ending, and you've got a really bad movie.
