Jane Austen's Mafia
(1998)
Reviewed by Patrick Brogan
Rating: 8.5 Beans

hen does a comedy fail, when it's sometimes funny, but most of the time, it's not. When is a comedy horrible, when it tries to be funny and it's not, then it becomes tedious. JANE AUSTEN'S MAFIA
tries to be funny with it's jokes, yet they are not funny. However, this movie keeps on trying with that famous Zucker/Abrhams spoof jokes, except with this film it becomes very very annoying. It becomes so annoying that you just want to scream, "I can't take it anymore!!!" With this movie, you will want to do that after the first ten minutes!

The typical spin-off plot for this movie is the plots of the current mafia classics of CASINO, GOODFELLAS, and THE GODFATHER TRILOGY. Jay Mohr, is the star of the film, supposedly is playing an Italina, and if that's one of the jokes, it's still not funny. The great Lloyd Bridges gives a poor performance as the aging mafia head. Bridges' role is not different than the ones he did in both HOT SHOTS, an aging old kook who does ridiculous things to himself.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy silly comedies. Including the comedy films done by the Zucker, Abrham and Zucker team, (or ZAZ for short). THE NAKED GUN is one of the funniest films that I have ever seen. And every time I watch AIRPLANE, there is a new joke that I did not catch before. Yet, MAFIA director Jim Abrham is the least talented one of the comedy team. It's obvious that Abrham is the one who did the movie spin-off jokes in AIRPLANE, TOP SECRET, and THE NAKED GUN, since all of MAFIA consists of movie-in-jokes.

If the movie ins't joking about THE GODFATHER, CASINO, or GOODFELLAS, then it's joking about FORREST GUMP, THE ENGLISH PATIENT, STAND BY ME, JAWS, and THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK. Plus the jokes are not even original. It was funny watching a group of people vomit in STAND BY ME, but it's tedious to see it in MAFIA. Also the funny casino games consist of: Chutes and Ladders, Guess the Number, and finding the pea under the shell that are featured in MAFIA, is a joke taken from VEGAS VACATION.

I'm suggesting that MAFIA should be avoided at all costs. It's not even bad enough to make fun at. It's just plain flat out bad! I can only say that you should go out and rent the movie that is directed by Jim Abrham's funnier partner, David Zucker BASEketball. That movie is funny, this one is just awful.
